Essay Contests

Almost from the earliest days of the Naval Institute, its essay contests have been one of its most important functions. On 13 June 1878, with Commander Alfred Thayer Mahan as acting Chair, the Naval Institute adopted rules for the first essay contest––the General Prize Essay Contest. This contest continues to this day. Over the years, the Naval Institute has sponsored some 25 distinct essay contests. Currently, the Naval Institute sponsors 12 essay contests.
