In the late 1980s, the sea services faced a technological revolution. State-of-the-art computers, composite materials, superconductors, and countless other innovations were changing the nature of military service and the lives of those who serve. Recognizing this, the October 1988 special issue of Proceedings and its companion essay mini-contest focused on "The Cutting Edge of Technology."
