A surface warfare officer should be an articulate, thinking, and active leader and tactician, and the founding of the U.S. Naval Destroyer School was an important step in developing a corps of this kind of professional naval officer who one day would take command at sea. Surface Warfare Officers School, however, has strayed from its roots, lost its focus, and is at risk of losing its relevance.
