Understanding Alfred Thayer Mahan’s corpus of work remains as necessary today as it was more than a century ago. In his new book, The Neptune Factor, Nicholas A. Lambert traces the evolution of Mahan’s conceptions of sea power. Economic power, Lambert demonstrates, and not just combat power, ultimately came to define sea power in Mahan’s mind. Although Mahan’s scholarship has long been seen as foundational to all systematic studies of naval power, The Neptune Factor is the first attempt to explain how his definition of sea power shifted over time. The recent activity in the Red Sea, including U.S. Navy leadership of the multinational task force to protect shipping from Houthi attacks, proves how relevant Mahan’s ideas remain today.

Don’t Forget To Vote!
Members of the Naval Institute have the responsibility and privilege of electing the Institute’s Board of Directors and Editorial Board members. Paper ballots were included in the January Proceedings and the February Naval History (for our Naval History members). Association Voting also sent an email to all members on 6 January with a link to vote online. The deadline to vote is 15 March.
In September every year, the nominating and governance committee of the Board of Directors nominates candidates to fill vacancies. Per the Institute’s constitution and bylaws, members can nominate candidates as well by submitting a petition signed by a minimum of 25 active Naval Institute members by 31 August for the following year’s ballot.
