Membership Dues Increase
It has been more than six years since the last time we increased the cost of membership dues. As we are all aware, inflation is real—running at more than 8 percent for the past few months, and postage and paper costs have been going up at an even faster rate. The Board of Directors approved a modest 6 percent dues increase effective 1 July. The best way to offset the increase is to lengthen the term of your membership. If you are a one-year member, increase to three years. Or consider becoming a life member and never have to deal with another dues increase. Surface Warfare Officer’s Department Head Guide
By Rear Admiral Fred Kacher, Captain Joseph A. Gagliano, and Commander Samantha A. O’Neil, U.S. Navy
Shortly after the attacks of 11 September 2001, then-Captain Fred Kacher wrote an article for Proceedings in which he shared what he learned during back-to-back department head deployments on board the USS Princeton (CG-59). For a number of years, that article was used in department head school at the Surface Warfare Officers School, was included in a Naval Institute leadership anthology, and ultimately set in motion the publication of this book. The Department Head Guide is “an anthology of best practices and helpful hints collected from successful surface warfare officers who have previously filled these critical department head roles.”

Naval Institute Foundation
In 2021, the Institute completed a successful fundraising campaign addressing many of its current needs, including construction of the new Conference Center. We are truly grateful to all who participated! As thankful as we are for current successes, leading the Institute through the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced our conviction that the future will bring more disruptive challenges. On behalf of generations of members who will follow us, consider investing in the Institute in as many ways as you can. This might include making monthly sustaining gifts, an outright donation, or a multiyear pledge of support. And please keep the Institute in mind as a worthy—and grateful—beneficiary of a distribution from your IRA. To create a more permanent legacy, consider including the Institute in your estate plan or sponsoring a chair or “brick” at the Jack C. Taylor Conference Center. Your investment will pay dividends for years to come!
