‘I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection.’ Thomas Paine (1737–1809)
Aviation Metalsmith 2nd Class Jack Cain has reason to smile as he poses in his dress blues at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, in February 1944. A Consolidated PBY Catalina crewman, he has just returned from two years of Pacific service, which included the Battles of Coral Sea and Midway. His rating as an aerial gunner is worn on his right sleeve.
