If you are a regular reader of Proceedings, you have undoubtedly heard about the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Before assuming duties as the director of Surface Warfare, I heard a lot, too—some good and some not. As the USS Freedom (LCS-1) continues her preparations to station forward in Singapore next spring and more LCSs are entering the Fleet, it is time to take a fix and communicate the way ahead. The LCS has experienced some challenges, but context is essential when debating the merits of this program.
