For more than two weeks in 1950—from 27 November to 13 December—30,000 members of the U.S. X Corps battled more than 60,000 troops from the 9th Army Group of the People’s Republic of China at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. Among the American forces were these Marines from the 1st Marine Division, who had to contend with not only being outnumbered 2-to-1, but also the brutal weather.
