Join the Debate
A few months ago, I mentioned to the SOUTHCOM Commander, Admiral Jim Stavridis, that I was looking for ways to encourage active duty service members—enlisted and officers alike—to write for Proceedings. Since he was scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Joint Warfighting 2008 conference in Virginia Beach in June, I asked him to consider including a few words on the importance of professional writing by members of the armed forces. I hoped he would offer more than an aside, though I was willing to take anything.
I was in for a shock. Admiral Stavridis devoted his entire speech to the value of writing for Proceedings and other professional journals. He told his audience of uniformed NCOs and officers that if they wanted to be "part of the conversation" on developments in their services and broader national security issues they needed to sit down at their computers and actively join the debate.
