Years before the Polaris missile went to sea (See "Polaris," page 30), the Navy had the Regulus, what would today be described as a cruise missile. The aircraft-sized Regulus I was first deployed in 1955 in the Pacific on board the cruiser USS Los Angeles (CA-135). In all, five submarines, four heavy cruisers, and ten aircraft carriers-including the USS Hancock (CVA-19) shown here-were adapted to operate the missile. Regulus patrols ended in 1964.
