The U.S. Coast Guard's 95 HH-65A Dolphins perform the service's airborne short-range, search-and- rescue missions and are the mainstay of its helicopter fleet. Bought as replacements for the venerable HH-52 Sea Guards, the Dolphins—basically reengined versions of the Aerospatiale Dauphin—began entering the inventory in November 1984. They now are based at air stations across the United States— and two are currently embarked in the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB-10) for Operation Deepfreeze '93. The distinctive orange paint scheme had been reserved only for aircraft of the Polar Operations Division that deploy with the Coast Guard's two polar icebreakers. Now, in order to increase their visibility, all HH-65As will receive the bright livery during their overhauls.
