This html article is produced from an uncorrected text file through optical character recognition. Prior to 1940 articles all text has been corrected, but from 1940 to the present most still remain uncorrected. Artifacts of the scans are misspellings, out-of-context footnotes and sidebars, and other inconsistencies. Adjacent to each text file is a PDF of the article, which accurately and fully conveys the content as it appeared in the issue. The uncorrected text files have been included to enhance the searchability of our content, on our site and in search engines, for our membership, the research community and media organizations. We are working now to provide clean text files for the entire collection.

The Naval Institute Press Presents The Legendary WWII German Submarine Commanded
U-Boat Ace
The Story of Wolfgang Luth
By Jordan Vause
A legend in his time, Wolfgang Luth sank some fifty Allied ships and led sixteen war patrols, the last setting a record 203 days at sea. He became the first of just two naval officers to win the Third Reich's highest award for valor, the Knight's Cross with Diamonds, and at the age of thirty-one was named the German naval academy's youngest commandant.
This biography, the first to be written on the surprisingly elusive ace, not only captures all of the excitement of Luth's wartime career, but also offers a penetrating portrait of a complex leader. As a character analysis of his strengths and weaknesses, it encapsulates the paradoxes inherent in so many German sub commanders, men spawned by the Nazi regime and yet not entirely of il.
Based primarily on interviews with members of his crew, the book shows Liith to be a man of contradictions: an ardent Nazi ideologue who could bend the rules for a slack sailor, a U-boat ace who could treat survivors of his attacks with clemency but then impetuously gun down other victims. In the end, the reader must decide whether this "hero" was saint or sinner and whether in towing the Nazi line he opted for an evil that lay beyond his comprehension. 256 pages/35 illus./
