Epicyclic Gears
“GE and RENK join forces to bring this advanced technology to the U.S. Navy.”
- Gary Mowers
Manager - Gear Engineering Lynn, Massachusetts
Searching The World
Globalization. Working with other world leaders to develop innovative ideas. “It’s nothing new to GE,” Gary said. “The Company knows this is the best way to incorporate the latest advances into our products and systems. While GE has designed, manufactured and delivered epicyclic gears to the Navy, we wanted to enhance our technical base. So we entered into a technology transfer agreement with the German gear manufacturer RENK TACKE. Their experience in epicyclic gears encompasses over 800 industrial, marine and naval applications.”
“GE will manufacture epicyclic gears in the world’s finest gear facility right here in Lynn,” Gary explained. “In this way, the Navy will benefit from over 30 years of RENK epicyclic gear experience, as well as over 75 years of GE engineering and manufacturing experience producing propulsion and ships service systems for America’s fleet.”
Quiet Running
Our objective is to produce quiet, reliable, light weight, high power density epicyclic gears. According to Gary, this goal is within reach. “GE has the newest technology that’s right for today’s Navy. Now we are combining it with noise and vibration advancements we pioneered for propulsion systems aboard almost every class of ship and submarine in the fleet, including the latest generation of hardened and ground gears for Arleigh Burke destroyers. An important reason we are working with RENK is that their epicyclic gears offer unique noise reduction features.”
Clusters Of Technology
While other companies only make gears, GE makes complete propulsion systems. “GE is using systems integration to harness multiple technologies to make the next generation of Navy ships a superior force,” Gary continued. “For example, our epicyclic gears will be integrated into the advanced electric drive propulsion system, which we were contracted to develop for the Navy in the coming years. Beyond epicyclic gears, GE is leading the way with Propulsion Derived Ships Service, Inter- cooled Regenerative Gas Turbines and other advanced technologies.”
A Proud Tradition “The Navy is a valued customer,” Gary concluded. “We offer unparalleled expertise in the design, manufacture and test of totally integrated propulsion and ships service power systems. It’s the GE difference. The successful application of advanced epicyclic gearing is a mission we share with the Navy. As in the past, we will accomplish this mission.”

Experience under the sea. Submarine propulsion and ships service turbine generator experience. GE has more of it than anyone. It’s why our Company is eminently qualified to design, manufacture and test these critical systems for the SSN 21 Seawolf. In 1957, seatrials of the original Seawolf heralded the first of many GE contributions to the nuclear submarine field. Since then, the Company has continued to pioneer advanced systems aboard every class of submarine including the latest 688’s.
SSN 688 Submarines, A Technical Standard
The entire Class relies on GE systems for both propulsion and ships service electrical demands. Their reliability is extraordinary. In fact, since the commissioning of the Los Angeles in 1976, these systems endured the equivalent of hundreds of years of service without a single ship coming off line for an at-sea failure.
Why? For a number of good reasons. First, GE engineers extrapolate the best ideas from existing technology and proven hardware during design and manufacture, while paying particular attention to key Navy criteria: reliability, noise, size, weight, performance, maintainability and accessibility. Then they exhaustively test each system under shipboard conditions before shipment.
On-Time Delivery, Worldwide Service
GE demonstrated construction efficiency, too, by delivering these 688 propulsion and SSTG systems to shipyards ahead of schedule. After installation, GE provides life cycle support through service facilities in every major Navy port in the U.S., and in major ports worldwide. Of course, factory experts are on-call 24 hours a day, too. Through this service team, continued evolutionary advances are made available to upgrade the existing fleet. Such upgrades aboard 688’s permit them to remain at sea years longer between overhauls.
Into The 21st Century
The heritage Edison began with the first shipboard power generation system continues today at GE Naval & Drive Turbine
Systems. Here, we apply the resources of our $40 billion Company to develop the most advanced propulsion and ships service systems. Experience allows us to do this. It’s the critical difference GE engineers build upon to advance the Navy mission with the SSN 21 Seawolf.

THE NAVY HAS BEEN DROPPING OUR SONOBUOYS FOR OVER 35 Yl
Today, Magnavox sonobuoys give the U.S. Navy more than twice the capability — at half the 1953 cost. Advances gained through technology allow us to cut cost, yet maintain the highest quality in detection capability. Magnavox sonobuoys find the underwater threat. Experience counts. During the last three decades, Magnavox has competitively bid and manufactured every major production sonobuoy the Navy has deployed. We've built four million to date — each is designed to feature flexibility and unsurpassed performance. The only company specializing in both “wet end" and 'dry end" ASW technology, Magnavox understands the synergy between the data-gathering sonobuoy and its companion airborne acoustic signal processor. After all, we produce nearly half the "wet end" devices and 75 percent of the "dry end" signal processing equipment used in our nation's P-3 aircraft.

hardware would have been needed just to keep the bearings in working condition.
But Allison’s ingeniously simple supercritical shafting requires no extra intershaft bearings or lubrication systems. So there is less to maintain.
In fact, it works so well, supercritical shafting was developed as an important part of the LHTEC T800 engine which was designed to power the LHX.

SMART: THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT IN 3-D RADAR
Integration of antimissile weapons and sensors in naval combat systems lets virtually closed the low-level gap in ship defence. What remained was vulnerability to the high-level missile threat.
To counter such a missile threat adequate weapons are of fundamental importance. The sensor, however, capable of timely, automatic detection and tracking of these targets, is a number one priority requirement. SMART is such a sensor. Sign ail’s new generation of 3-D radars deals with threats from aircraft and missiles approaching from any elevation between horizon and zenith. So SMART further increases survivability in multiple-attack scenarios.
FROM CRISIS MANAGEMENT TO STATUS OF CRISIS PREVENTION
SMART is a fully automatic F-band surveillance, target detection and tracking radar with an impressive multi-target capacity.
Its 3-D capability complements the initial target information for threat evaluation. Integration of an accurate 3-D radar in naval air defence systems, for faster reaction, is most essential. Effective control of tracking radars and weapons starts with a complete and continuously updated track file, providing confirmed 3-D tracks of all targets, including outgoing missiles.
To perform this basic function SMART combines the very best of Signaal’s radar technology, incorporating a wide range of ECCM and anti-clutter capabilities. Never before has the solution to all-level air threats to surface ships been so readily available. Conclusion: SMART is an important step ahead in radar technology ^1 typiO"L changes warship defence from lts jati',tj status of crisis management to t' comfort of crisis prevention.

MagneTek. On board every (lass of ship in today's navy.
In the early 1900s, a Louis Allis electric motor was fitted aboard a U.S. Navy vessel for the first time. And a tradition was born.
Today, MagneTek Louis Allis is a major supplier of Mil-Spec motors, generators, drives, secondary propulsion systems and ECM equipment to the Navy. MagneTek Jefferson Electric power transformers are specified for many shipboard electrical applications. And MagneTek ALS frequency converters provide reliable power for every AEGIS weapon system afloat.
And that’s not all.
MagneTek components help run everything from electric lights and microwave ovens to service pumps and elevators on today’s Navy vessels.
By many names we’ve been providing power solutions to the U.S. Navy for over half a century. By our new first name — MagneTek — we’re prouder than ever to be in the Navy now.

It fits OSA like a glove.
OSA, of course, is an acronym for Operational Support Aircraft.
As the name suggests, the function of an OSA-type operation in the military is airlift.
In the U.S. Navy, for example, the primary role of OSA is to provide rapid transport of key personnel and priority cargo to and within a given theater of naval operations. Passengers are usually specialists with critically needed skills; cargo is often vital parts for sophisticated equipment.
Because OSA payloads are measured by quality, not quantity, OSA airplanes must have exceptional performance and utmost dependability.
If the U.S. Navy set out to design the aircraft that could meet or exceed its foreseeable OSA requirements into the next century, it would want the airplane to have these capabilities:
• The speed and range to respond to unique short-fused requirements in support of remote battle groups.
• Extremely reliable turbofan engines with excellent fuel efficiency and low maintenance requirements.
• The highest levels of technology in computerized flight management systems integrated with electronic flight instruments, and other highly reliable advanced systems that enable the aircraft and flight crews to operate at peak efficiency.
• The performance to use virtually any airport in the world.
• Sufficient size to provide room for as many as 27 people, or up to 9,000 pounds of cargo, or some combination of the two.
If that airplane came off the drawing board and could do all these things, it would be j ust like the one you see here.
That’s right. The ideal OSA aircraft already exists.
It is our Gulfstream IV. It is designed, in production, and proving every day in service with the world’s major corporations and governments that its uncommon versatility results in uncommon productivity. As the C-20F Gulfstream, it would be the newest generation of the C-20 Gulfstreams that are so effective in operation with America’s military.
For OSA, it fits.
For more information about maximizing Gulfstream jet aircraft in military applications, contact: Larry O. Oliver, Regional Vice President, Military Requirements, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, 1000 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 2701, Arlington, Virginia 22209 U.S. A. Telephone: (703) 276-9500.

Technologies of Surveillance:
TI’s ASW systems, when the naked eye just isn’t good enough.
*
To patrol an ocean, you need a better pair of eyes. Searching day and night, in fair weather and foul. Sweeping the surface for any sign of trouble. Plus monitoring action below the surface.
For almost 50 years, Texas Instruments has been equipping airborne sea patrols with the “eyes” they need. Since World War II, TI has designed, refined and produced maritime surveillance and ASW systems for both land-based and carrier aircraft.
To see just how far we’ve come since 1941, look at today’s equipment roster:
• AN/APS-137 — ISAR (Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar); major upgrade of our periscope detecting radar, generating true twodimensional radar images with
01-0487 ©1987 TI
greatly enhanced long-range detection capabilities.
• AN/APS-134 — long range maritime surveillance radar, to detect small targets, like submarine periscopes.
• AN/AAS-36 — IRDS (Infrared Detecting System), using FLIR technology invented by TI, for passive search and ship identification.
• AN/ASQ-81( ) — Advanced Digital MAD, with increased range and five times the reliability.
Today’s advanced technology has evolved from those early systems. And TI will continue refining these existing systems and inventing new ones, with our experience and commitment to R&D leading the way. That’s why TI
is the leader in developing an^ producing maritime surveillanCL airbome ASW systems. . tf

Ned Myers: A Life Before the Mast
By James Fenimore Cooper Introduction and notes by William S. Dudley Arguably the best of the nautical reminiscences to come out of the early nineteenth century, this influential work by one of America’s favorite writers is as good a read today as it was when first published in 1843. The result of a unique collaboration between a world- famous author and a seasoned seaman, the book preserves the colorful language of the common sailor while at the same time making full use of James Fenimore Cooper's skills as a writer. It is a remarkable tale of adventure and a valuable social commentary on life in the lower decks. 288 pages.

WHERE IS THE THUNDERSTORM!
Stormscope system shows a smalla!fw
of thunderstorm activity at approxima1 9:00. We proceeded on course and e countered level 2 and 3 rainfall, but n thunderstorm activity.
CLEAR lyTT'l
i©
Stormscope system shows no significant electrical discharge activity within 75nm at 12:00, therefore no need to deviate. We proceeded through the level 3 and 4 areas indicated on radar without incident.
Stormscope™ Series II system shows electrical discharge activity 25nm straight ahead. On this test flight, we deviated left (into the level 5 activity) and flew smoothly through heavy rain.
Weather radar indicates level 5 rainfall between 10:30 and 11:30, suggests that the path is clear straight ahead. But wait!

These test flights demonstrate why you shouldn’t rely solely on radar for airborne thunderstorm avoidance. True, radar can provide pilots with valuable weather information. But only Stormscope systems detect and map thunderstorms to provide the information required by pilots to avoid them. And, unlike radar, Stormscope systems are

Mk45:
the gun that delivers.
The advanced Mk45 concept
PMC’s automatic gun system offers flexible response, plus a design base for the future.
The Mk45 is the most compact, lightweight, reliable '-inch naval gun ever built. And now in the Mod 1 configuration it is capable of firing highly accurate guided projectiles as well as all conventional 5'754 amrr>unition—in any desired sequence from a mixed magazine. It is completely automated.
In addition to GP/conventional round selection, recent Modifications include all solid-state controls with built- ln test and simulation modes. Using advanced displays, °ne man can activate the entire Mk45 system to verify operability and readiness, all without moving ammunition. The simulation mode allows crews to Use the working system for fast, effective training.
protected and thoroughly hardened to withstand
^ the all-weather weapon—water-tight, anti-iced,
combat environments. In fact, it’s the only gun mount * *ts caliber to pass U.S. Navy barge shock tests.
^od we haven’t ignored the future. The Mk45 is now Positioned for even more growth including higher rates r fire. It will be a multimission weapon capable of n°Untering most sea/land/air threats. It’s happening at FMC, where independent R&D is yielding an Mproved configuration for the 1990’s and beyond.

“It was like this. We’d have six of ’em in the air and I get told the mission’s being changed from air-to-air over to air-to-ground. I tell the guy in the sky and it’s done.
He’s air-to-ground, just like that. We’ve actually changed the mission while they’re flying—no other plane could do that.

“There are still some folks out there who think we train two pilots to fly two different Hornets—fighter pilots for the ‘F-18’ and attack pilots for the A-18.’ They’re completely missing the beauty of this machine for the Navy.
“This one plane flies both missions and the pilot is trained for both missions. For a squadron skipper like me, the dual role advantage means I’ve got a lot more capability on hand. So when I get the order for additional strike force or more combat air patrol, I can give ’em a ‘yes’ instead of a plea for four more hours to get some different equipment in the air.
