Proud leader. She's at sea, ready for missions anywhere on the globe. Aboard: close to 100 tactical aircraft, 4.5 acres of flight deck, more than 6,200 crewmen and enough fuel to keep her steaming into the Twenty-first Century.
Bold Namesake______________
The CVN 71 bears a name that signifies greatness. Hunter, scholar, diplomat, naturalist, "rough rider", Nobel Prize winner, President— Theodore Roosevelt stood alone in many ways among American heroes. "For the protection of our own shores," he once said, "we need a great Navy." True to his word, he dispatched the Great White Fleet around the world as a symbol of democracy. It is fitting his legacy of seapower lives today in the newest, most technologically advanced carrier in the fleet.
Punishing Duty
GE steam propulsion systems power the entire Nimitz Class, including the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt. No other class of vessel in U.S. Navy history has demanded more raw propulsion power and rugged durability. Why? Because flight operations demand extensive maneuvering at high power, which subjects propulsion systems to punishing duty cycles... day after day, year after year. That’s where GE experience meets the challenge.
Proud Tradition_______________
GE "flat-top" experience began with the world's first aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Langley, in the 1920's, continued with the legendary Lexington and Saratoga in the 40's, and culminated with super carriers today. Already aboard the U.S.S. I\limitz, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Carl Vinson, GE recently delivered propulsion systems for the Abraham Lincoln and George Washington scheduled for commissioning within the next five years.
Experience Leader
From super carriers and super-quiet submarines to the smallest auxiliary ships, GE is the leading supplier of propulsion and ships service turbine generator systems to the U.S. Navy. At GE, the job begins with hardware design, manufacture and test, and continues with dedicated service as our engineers install, maintain and overhaul Navy vessels at major ports worldwide. We are proud of this historic, time-honored partnership. We look forward to building upon this experience in the future to advance the Navy mission into the Twenty-first Century. F-14APlus: Nowon active duty
With the delivery of FI 10 production engines, the Super Tomcat takes a big step forward.
On April 15,1988, an F-14A Plus made the first carrier landing on the U.S.S. Independence and began suitability testing. Active duty aircraft are now in operation at Oceana. Other aircraft have been delivered to Patuxent River and Point Mugu.
During the flight test program, now complete, the FI 10 exceeded all performance targets, which means the USN now has the engine it’s been looking for: shipboard launches without after-burner; faster acceleration; reduced maintenance costs; 60% more range; one-third more time on station.
More engines are on the way; production is on schedule. And the fighter of the future, the F-14D, gets closer every day.

MAGI — BEEN THE PRICE FOR JUST AS LONG.
Today, Magnavox sonobuoys give the U.S. Navy more than twice the capability —at half the 1953 cost. Advances gained through technology allow us to cut cost, yet maintain the highest quality in detection capability. Magnavox sonobuoys find the underwater threat. Experience counts. During the last three decades, Magnavox has competitively bid and manufactured every major production sonobuoy the Navy has deployed. We've built four million to date — each is designed to feature flexibility and unsurpassed performance. The only company specializing in both "wet end" and 'dry end" ASW technology, Magnavox understands the synergy between the data-gathering sonobuoy and its companion airborne acoustic signal processor. After all, we produce nearly half the "wet end" devices and 75 percent of the "dry end" signal processing equipment used in our nation's P-3 aircraft.

WE MAKE HOUSE CALLS.
As with any maintenance program, the bulk of the time spent on a down plane is spent in diagnosis.
That’s why Sanders’ automated test systems are invaluable. Completely automatic and programmable, these units can cut diagnostic time down to minutes. Like a private robotic physician, they can even be programmed to analyze the idiosyncrasies
of individual aircraft: fighters, bombers, transports, and helicopters.
Used in a regimen of preventative maintenance, our test systems can run an aircraft’s defensive systems through a complete range of simulated threats on the flight line, in the hangar or at depot levels.
The benefit is self-evident: full mission readiness.

Mobile Undersea Systems Test
Since Martin Marietta entered naval systems development, one focus has been underwater technology and its application to undersea warfare. This work is directed at developing, testing and demonstrating advanced sensory, control and signal processing systems and underwater laser systems to help the Navy - its surface vessels, submarines and aircraft-detect, track and discriminate between undersea targets with unparalleled accuracy and speed.

SCIENCE SCOPE
The first Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) to be test fired with a live warhead destroyed a target drone. The AMRAAM was launched at medium range from a U.S. Air Force F-16 traveling at Mach 0.9 at 10,000 feet. The target drone was flying at Mach 0.8 at 7,000 feet. When the AMRAAM came within close range, the missile’s warhead detonated and destroyed the drone. Developed by Hughes Aircraft Company, the AMRAAM is designed for use by the U.S. Air Force on F-15 and F-16 aircraft, by the U.S. Navy on F-14 and F/A-18 fighters, and on West German F-4F Phantoms, and United Kingdom’s Sea Harrier and Tornado Air Defence Variant aircraft.
Automobile drivers using a Head-Up Display (HUD) need not divert their eyes from the road to view information ordinarily shown in the instrument panel. The HUD focuses key driving data, including vehicle speed and turn signal indicators, through the windshield, so the data appears to be suspended over the front bumper. The system design is derived from HUDs used in today’s advanced fighter aircraft. Developed by Hughes, Delco Electronics, and General Motors, the automotive HUD uses a collimating optical system, with an electronically driven, high-performance display device. The world’s first production cars equipped with a HUD will be the 1988 Cutlass Supreme Indianapolis 50 Pace Car and limited edition replica cars.
A new computer system provides accurate, timely reports at an annual cost savings of $152,000. Designed and built by Hughes, the Parts Logistics Analysis Network (PLAN)is used to track data on electronic components from their inception as engineering requirements through procurement, receiving, inventory, and the work cycle of Hughes satellite programs. PLAN “digests” requests for specific data banks, and promotes user control through “friendly” connections. PLAN also enables those who are most familiar with the data to manage the information, and requires minimal programmer intervention of system control languages.
One of the longest lived production runs of a high-power traveling wave tube (TWT) produced by the industry still represents state-of-the-art technology, and has enjoyed a high instance of on-time deliveries and quality workmanship. Hughes pioneered TWTs, and the Model 797H is one. of the industry’s most successful programs with the 4,000th unit of the landmark TWT recently being manufactured. In 1987, the program recorded a 100 percent test yield by shipping 27 tubes out of 27 tubes tested. In addition, the program has reduced manufacturing costs more than 30 percent by uSin~ cycle time management techniques and redesigning for ease of manufacture. The 797H’s main application has been in a sophisticated radar system which has been in continuous production for over 20 years.

A fiber optic data link will allow a relatively low cost homing missile to lock onto and guide to its in Hughes’ version of the U.S. Army Missile Command Advanced Anti-tank Weapon System-Mod111 (AAWS-M). Designed to be used against moving and stationary main battle tanks, the AAWS-M wil replace the Army’s Dragon anti-tank weapon system. Test firings of the AAWS-M will run through 1988, with full-scale development beginning in early 1989. The system is scheduled to be operations in the early 1990s.

IJ ow that extremely fast and intelligent antisurface missiles can mean the end of a whole ship, the call is for a highly effective shipborne close-in weapon system.
Reason why a growing number of navies Want Goalkeeper on their ships. Goalkeeper, a sophisticated close-in Weapon system with the search and tracking radars fully integrated on the gun
mount. Both radars feature the latest anti-clutter and ECCM techniques.
The tracking radar operates on two wave-lengths, making it insensitive to
interference by sea reflections and giving it a supreme tracking accuracy.
A fully autonomous and automated weapon control system links the radars to the 30 mm GE Gatling gun.
The proven features of this 4200 RPM gun, the terminal effectiveness of its ammo and the overall system reliability give Goalkeeper its unsurpassed stopping power. Here, too, our full system integration provides an answer that remains up-to-date.

At Ford Aerospace, sound thinking pays off.
Training aces. We’re helping train U.S. and allied air crews for survival in combat. We design, operate and maintain electronic warfare, tactical and gunnery ranges. Simulating hostile environments. Scoring engagements. Processing information for feedback. Performing at standards well above specifications.
Seeking efficiencies. We’ve been working with the Navy for years to develop and produce a Low-Cost Seeker for the Navy’s High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile — HARM. Using specially-packaged microwave circuitry, our new seeker is less complex and less expensive than its predecessor. And will be even better at countering new threats.

We helped protect the Globe in 1588.
You might be surprised that Royal Ordnance serves every theater of military operations.
In the air. On land. And at sea
And you might be surprised that we design and manufacture a complete range of weapon systems and sub-systems; as well as the reliable munitions which made our reputation.
But our customers aren’t surprised. Since Shakespeare’s at the Globe Theatre, Royal Ordnance products have been in action in every mqjor event of Britain’s military history.
Today, we are involved in everything from Air Force ground attack weapons and air-combat missiles to infantry weapons, artillery systems, specialist combat vehicles, naval missile systems, torpedo warheads, and mines.
We’re using this comprehensive experience in cooperation with American companies to meet the demanding requirements of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.
Currently, we are working on programs as diverse as insensitive munitions, low signature and liquid propellants, mine clearing line charges, intercom systems, future mortar systems and their ammunition, low recoil force guns, reactive armors, and lightweight howitzer developments.
After 400 years, Royal Ordnance still plays the Globe. All of it. Thanks to partnerships bom in tradition and designed for excellence.

Because conditions are seldom ideal...
For more than 25 years, Control Data has been a leading supplier of reliable militarized information management systems and products you can rely on under all conditions.
Ideal, or otherwise.
No matter what the environment, platform, or mission, Control Data’s Government Systems Group has a unique ability for combining advanced technologies into systems for a wide range of defense-related applications. We have proved our ability to design and integrate information systems with an architecture flexible enough to meet the challenges of ever-changing environments.
Land-based systems. Control Data has designed and integrated the world’s first digital fire control system for the Abrams main battle tank. Other land-based achievements include: CYBER computers and software used for the massive signal processing tasks in NORAD’s Pave Paws Early Warning phased array radar network.
Airborne capabilities. Our Reconnaissance Management System (RMS) lets flight personnel study realtime information gathered from external sensors, then relay pertinent mission information to command centers. We’ve also designed the Navy’s standard AN/AYK-14 airborne computer to be reconfigurable for a wider range of performance and memory capabilities.
Information at sea. Control Data’s experience in integrating sophisticated data systems into even more sophisticated shipboard systems resulted in our being chosen to develop directed-fire systems such as the Phalanx Close-in Weapons System and the AEGIS Shipboard Air Defense. Our ASW capabilities include a fully-integrated system capable of handling sonobuoys or dipping sonar systems, or a mix of both—aboard ship or on airborne platforms.
The future. We intend to remain in the vanguard of advanced information management systems development. Regardless of the mission, environment or platform, experience is what makes Control Data’s Government Systems Group one of the most reliable suppliers for systems, systems integration, hardware and software.

NATOAAW?
Flagship.
Any serious group effort demands a leader. Someone to carry the flag. And that’s exactly the role Westinghouse has taken on to get the NATO Anti-Air Warfare project through its initial Concept Exploration Phase.
As the system prime contractor, Westinghouse is heading a multinational Universal Naval Integrated Surface to Air Missile System (UNISAMS) Team made up of the Netherlands, West Germany, England, Canada, Spain and the U.S. And were confident our collective experience and expertise will make this a successful endeavor.
We have the skill in advanced technology necessary' for the NATO AAW program. Moreover, our approach will be to develop a fully-compliant, top- down concept, not to modify existing systems.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Westinghouse has been chosen to participate in an international program. Just look at our experience in die NFR-90 NATO frigate program. We are the U.S. Navy’s representative to an eight-nation consortium working on diis project.
So, to keep NATO’s fleet moving against the future threats, you can count on Westinghouse to lead the way.
You have our word on it.

WE HAVE A GREAT REPUTATION FOR LISTENING.
^"22 Osprey takes off like a helicopter. It hovers a helicopter But it also flies like an airplane.
To make this possible, theT406 engines must operate both horizontally and vertically. Qu Obviously, that could have been a problem.
Sy Sr mantJtourers proposed more conventional wifh intershaft bearings. Unfortunately, with ,tnacelles rotating up and down, a lot of complex
hardware would have been needed just to keep the bearings in working condition.
But Allison's ingeniously simple supercritical shafting requires no extra intershaft bearings or lubrication systems. So there is less to maintain.
In fact, it works so well, supercritical shafting was developed as an important part of the LHTEC T800 engine which was designed to power the LHX.

“There are still some folks out there who think we train two pilots to fly two different Hornets—fighter pilots for the ‘F-18’ and attack pilots for the ‘A-18.’ They’re completely missing the beauty of this machine for the Navy.
“This one plane flies both missions and the pilot is trained for both missions. For a squadron skipper like me, the dual role advantage means I’ve got a lot more capability on hand. So when I get the order for additional strike force or more combat air patrol, I can give ’em a ‘yes’ instead of a plea for four more hours to get some different equipment in the air.
“I led one of four squadrons of Hornets on the Coral Sea during the Libyan action. Coral’s one of the smaller carriers in the fleet—too small for other fighters so they filled her up with Hornets.
“It was like this. We’d have six of ’em in the air and I get told the mission’s being changed from air-to-air over to air-to-ground. I tell the guy in the sky and it’s done.
He’s air-to-ground, just like that. We’ve actually changed the mission while they’re flying—no other plane could do that.
