It is well-known that the weapons of war are constantly changing, following the evolution of science and technique. It is, however, less clearly understood that the fighting man's faith in his weapons is itself influenced by the technical forces that create them. To a large extent technique sells us our weapons. We tend to think well or ill of them in terms of the salesman's prospectus.
