In Memoriam: John Prados, 1951-2022

The U.S. Naval Institute mourns the passing of acclaimed historian John Prados, the 2021 Naval History Author of the Year, who died on 29 November 2022.

Dr. John Prados

Dr. Prados, a senior analyst at the National Security Archive, was the author of numerous books related to intelligence and military history, including Combined Fleet Decoded: The Secret History of American Intelligence and the Japanese Navy in World War II (Random House: 1995) and Storm Over Leyte: The Philippine Invasion and the Destruction of the Japanese Navy (Dutton, 2016).

Dr. Prados garnered Naval History Author of the Year honors for his June 2021 article “Intel Assignment: Tokyo” and his December 2021 article “Pearl Harbor at 80.”

But for many years, he was a recurring, and always welcome, contributor to Naval History. For links to his Naval History articles, go to:
