Lieutenant Commander Hutchinson was both enlisted journalist and officer on the USS Northampton (CIC-1), operations officer on USS Glacier (AGB-4), and executive officer of the USS Severn (AO-61). Ashore, he graduated from Columbia, taught at Notre Dame, served both as Amphibious Ready Group intelligence officer and advisor in Vietnam, and in the Pentagon tested new landing craft and briefed the Chief of Naval Operations on riverine warfare. He retired in 1976 as Deputy Director of the Navy’s Communications Security Material System in Washington. His awards include the Bronze Star with combat “V” and the Navy Commendation Medal, as well as Republic of Vietnam medals.
