Richard B. Frank is a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and retired attorney. His first book, Guadalcanal (Random House, 1990), won the General Wallace M. Greene Award from the U.S. Marine Corps. His second work, Downfall: The End of the Imperial Japanese Empire (Random House, 1999), won the Harry S. Truman Book Award. Besides his numerous appearances on television and radio, he was a consultant for the epic HBO miniseries The Pacific. He is currently working on a narrative history trilogy about the Asian-Pacific War.
Thomas C. Hone is a recently retired member of the faculty of the Naval War College and a former senior executive in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He and his son Trent are the authors of Battle Line: The United States Navy, 1919–1939 (Naval Institute Press, 2006). Dr. Hone also edited the recently released book The Battle of Midway: The Naval Institute Guide to the U.S. Navy’s Greatest Victory (2013).
Tim McGrath, who earned a BA in history from Temple University, is a businessman and avid sailor from Philadelphia. His biography John Barry: An American Hero in the Age of Sail (Westholme, 2010) was a finalist for the 2010 Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Excellence in Naval Literature. His next book, Give Me a Fast Ship (NAL/Penguin), about the Continental Navy, will be released in 2014.
Alan P. Rems, a retired certified public accountant, has been a regular contributor to Naval History since his article titled “Halsey Knows the Straight Story” appeared in the August 2008 issue and earned him selection as the magazine’s Author of the Year. Rems is the author of what will be the first comprehensive history of World War II in the South Pacific, tentatively titled South Pacific: The Untold Story, forthcoming from the Naval Institute Press. His article was adapted from the book.
David Sears, a New Jersey–based military historian and former U.S. Navy destroyer officer, is the author of four books, including Pacific Air: How Fearless Flyboys, Peerless Aircraft, and Fast Flattops Conquered the Skies in the War with Japan (2011) and Such Men As These: The Story of Navy Pilots Who Flew the Deadly Skies Over Korea (2010), both published by Da Capo.
