World War II was not just about the fighting, it was about life.
There was a world outside the war zones and, as fighting men (and women) have done for years, they carried with them as much as they could of that world. It often wasn’t much; a ring, a locket, a photograph, a letter. When they had a place to hang their helmet, it became home lor whatever that was worth.
Home is personal, thus the locations became personalized. Walls, ceilings, tents, or trees were hung with reminders of a real—or idealized— home. The reminders were usually in the form of a pin-up.
Some pin-ups were more prevalent than others, but all were a slice of home.
