The U.S. Naval Institute Mission Statement
 
The Mission of the Institute is to provide an independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write in order to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to national defense.
 
Vision

Through intellectual rigor and honesty second to none, the Naval Institute will be the organization that tests the conventional wisdom and explores the power of new ideas on National Defense, the role of the Sea Services in preserving it, and our commitment to those in uniform who provide it.

We embrace the ethics and values of the Sea Services – Honor, Courage and Commitment - service above self.

Objectives

We seek to foster in all Americans a greater understanding of:

1. The need for a strong national defense;
2. The enduring role of the sea services in preserving it and;
3. Our national obligation to the men and women of the all-volunteer force who provide it.

The Naval Institute shall remain

INDEPENDENT – A non-profit member association, with no government support, that does not lobby for special interests;

NON-PARTISAN – An independent, professional military association with a mission, goals and objectives that transcend political affiliations; and shall encourage

IDEAS – Through its respected journals Proceedings and Naval History, its conferences, its books and its online content, in support of those who serve.
