Commander Robert E. Mumford, Jr., U.S. Navy, graduated in 1957 from the University of Rochester with a bachelor's degree in history and was commissioned as an ensign from the regular NROTC program. He received a master's degree in political science from the University of Colorado in 1968. He is a 1976 graduate of the Army War College. Commander Mumford has served in an ASW aircraft carrier, amphibious, and auxiliary ships. He commanded the USS Fresno (LST-1182) from 1973 to 1975. The ship was awarded the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for fiscal year 1975. He is now head of prospective commanding officer/prospective executive officer human resource management training at the Naval Amphibious School in Coronado, California.
