Rear Admiral Julius Augustus Furer, U.S. Navy (Retired) (1880–1963) was born on October 9, 1880 in Mosel, Wisconsin. He was graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1901 and was assigned to the USS Indiana (BB-1). In 1911 he was put in charge of purchasing all tools, machinery, and dock facilities for Naval Station Pearl Harbor. During World War I Furer was in command of the Supply Division of the Bureau of Construction and Repair. Following the war he was assigned to the United States Pacific Fleet. In 1928 he was assigned to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where he would supervise the modernization of the battleships Pennsylvania (BB-38) and USS New Mexico (BB-40). Later, Furer served the Naval Attaché at the United States Embassy in London, United States Embassy in Paris, the United States Embassy in Berlin, and the United States Embassy in Rome. During World War II he served as Coordinator of Research and Development and the senior member of the National Research and Development Board.
