Enlisting in the Navy in 1934, Chief Journalist Smith has had a varied career in submarines, surface craft, and aviation. Appointed a Chief Journalist in 1948, he is the senior enlisted man of that rating in the Navy. His first aviation duty was in the Aircraft Utility Unit of the U. S. Asiatic Fleet in the middle 1930’s. He is currently serving on the public information staff of the Chief of Naval Air Training at Pensacola.
