A retired British naval officer, Mr. Watson participated in the experiments which led to the conversion of the ferry-steamer Manxman into a ship capable of launching landplanes and to the conversion of HMS Furious* Glorious, and Courageous into the first true carriers. The photographs of the Furious on pages 478-479 are reproduced through the courtesy of Mr. R. L. Jermain, who was a Commander in the Royal Navy and executive officer of the Furious during the latter part of World War I.
