A graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy in 1902, Admiral Land served in various U. S. Navy capacities until his retirement in 1937 at which time he became a member of the U. S. Maritime Commission. From 1938 until his retirement in 1946, he served as Chairman of that organization, and during World War II was War Shipping Administrator. Immediately upon his second retirement, Admiral Land became president of the Air Transport Association of America, a position he held until his most recent retirement at the end of 1953.
