Chance-Vought F4U Corsairs of Marine Fighter Squadron (VMF) 311 “Hell’s Belles” are silhouetted by tracer fire at Yontan Airfield, Okinawa, on 16 April 1945. The squadron arrived at the field just six days after its capture on 1 April. During its four-month deployment on the island, the unit was credited with destroying 71 Japanese aircraft.
