'There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm'
-Willa Cather (1873-1947)
GUARDSMEN AGAINST THE SEA Engulfed by a hurricane-maddened sea, Coasties battle for their lives in 1944 off the north coast of Cuba. For three days the mid-September storm pounded the Coast Guard-manned tanker with waves whipped to 60-foot crests by 90-mph wids. The four—from front: Coxswain Elwood Donahue, Coxswain Thomas Burroughs, Seaman First Class Nick Mustappa, and Warrant Boatswain Maurice Chaplin—and their ship survived.
