Just Call Her Captain

Today it's common to see women on board ships of all types, including combatants. But it wasn't always that way. One of the first generation of women officers to go to sea looks back at how far they've come.
I can still hear the CO's words clearly from the day I reported to my first ship in August 1980. It was one of the first things he said to me as I sat in my blues, perched with perfect posture on the chair in his inport cabin during my in call.

Captain Reed served on six ships, with the honor of commanding three of them: the USS Kiska, USS Willamette (AO-180), and USS Detroit (AOE-4). She also was the Commander Logistics Forces, United States Naval Forces Central Command (CTF 53) and is the commander of the University of New Mexico's NROTC unit.
