During late 1944, when the Navy was preparing for the invasion of the Japanese homeland, several new carrier air groups were formed, one of which was Carrier Air Group 92 (CVG-92).
The Navy established CVG-92 2 on December 1944 at NAS Atlantic City, New Jersey. On 15 December, Commander Kenneth F. Musick assumed command and led the group until its demise one year later. CVG- 92’s component squadrons were VT-92 with Grumman/Eastern TBF-1C/3 Avengers, VF-92 with Grumman F6F-3/5 Hellcats, and VB-92 with Curtiss SB2C-1C/3 Hell- divers. VBF-92 followed with Vought F4U-1D/4 Corsairs and F6F-3s when formed on 2 January 1945.
CVG-92 immediately began training for its deployment to the Western Pacific. The group’s initial assignment to the USS Boxer (CV-21) was canceled as CVG-92 detached from ComFair Quonset and reported on 5 May 1945 to ComFair Alameda. After further training in California, the group departed later that month for final stages of combat training in Hawaii. Carrier qualifications were conducted there on board the Wasp (CV-18) and the Hancock (CV-19).
Completing a “hurry-up workup” in late June, CVG-92 began transfer to the Marianas area, embarking in CVEs and fleet transports for deployment to the forward area. Arriving at Guam by mid-July, the squadrons immediately were sent to Naval Air Base Kobler Field, Saipan, where they conducted more training. Embarking in the Lexington (CV-16) on 24 September 1945, the group relieved CVG-94 to begin support operations for the occupation of Japan. Air Group 92’s only combat actions occurred in early August 1945 during its final training at Saipan when its squadrons conducted strikes against the Japanese-held island of Rota.
The Lexington and CVG-92 left the Far East on 3 December for return to the United States. They arrived on 15 December at San Francisco, and the following day, Air Group 92 was disbanded.
