This html article is produced from an uncorrected text file through optical character recognition. Prior to 1940 articles all text has been corrected, but from 1940 to the present most still remain uncorrected. Artifacts of the scans are misspellings, out-of-context footnotes and sidebars, and other inconsistencies. Adjacent to each text file is a PDF of the article, which accurately and fully conveys the content as it appeared in the issue. The uncorrected text files have been included to enhance the searchability of our content, on our site and in search engines, for our membership, the research community and media organizations. We are working now to provide clean text files for the entire collection.

8 May 94, New Orleans, LA. Contac1
An undamaged participant at the attack on Pearl Harbor, the three-year-old Brooklyn-class light cruiser Phoenix (CL-46) immediately sortied in a vain search for the Japanese carriers. The lucky-starred warship never again lacked for targets during World War II. After escorting convoys to Australia, Java, and Ceylon early in 1942, she steamed to Philadelphia for an overhaul, emerging in September 1943, shortly after this photo was taken. After delivering Secretary of State Cordell Hull to the Casablanca Conference in December 1943, the Phoenix steamed again for the Southwest Pacific. There, the ship participated in numerous preinvasion bombardments during 1944 and 1945, miraculously escaping damage while dealing
ferocious destruction to targets ashore. Despite attacks by bombers, kamikazes, and even a submarine, the Phoenix lost but one sailor while under fire during the war. The 10,000-ton cruiser’s 15 six-inch guns caused i" large measure the sinking of the Japanese battleship Fuso in Surigao Strait during the Battle of Leyte Gulf- and for that and her other exploits, the Phoenix earned nine battle stars. Decommissioned at Philadelphia in July 1946, the ship was sold to Argentina in 1951. On 2 May 1982, her luck ran out southwest of the Falkland Islands when, as the General Belgrano (C-4), she was struck by two torpedoes fired by the nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror (S-48), taking hundreds of Argentine sailors with her to the bottom.
