This html article is produced from an uncorrected text file through optical character recognition. Prior to 1940 articles all text has been corrected, but from 1940 to the present most still remain uncorrected. Artifacts of the scans are misspellings, out-of-context footnotes and sidebars, and other inconsistencies. Adjacent to each text file is a PDF of the article, which accurately and fully conveys the content as it appeared in the issue. The uncorrected text files have been included to enhance the searchability of our content, on our site and in search engines, for our membership, the research community and media organizations. We are working now to provide clean text files for the entire collection.

“Tough Sledding”
It was December 1944. Leyte Gulf and Surigao Strait were behind us, as was Lingayen Gulf. We were in that “waiting” period between engagements that characterizes war, we knew how good we were and were looking forward to defeating the best that the enemy could send against us. It was also hot and humid, as was to be expected in the tropics.
Thanksgiving had gone and Christmas was fast approaching. We were bored and time hung heavy on our hands. The “Word Game,” Pinochle, and reading were not enough. The main battery plotting room was in perfect shape. All of the equipment was operating to the limits of its design specifications—or beyond. (This to the dismay of the technical representatives of the manufacturers who came aboard to check on their equipment.) We, the fire controlmen assigned to main battery plot, had studied and worked on all of our equipment in the turrets as well as the plotting room to bring it to the peak of its operating capacity, thus giving the USS West Virginia (BB-48) the best gunnery in the fleet, hence, the world.
We had to devise some new challenge. How it came about I can’t explain, but somehow we learned that our circular aluminum light fixtures gave a musical tone when struck with the blade of a screwdriver. Further, by adjusting the screws that held the fixtures together, the fixture actually could be tuned. Voila! What better way to celebrate the season than by playing “Jingle Bells” on the lighting fixtures in main plot.
So that became our project for Christmas. We tuned and listened, listened and tuned, until we achieved a recognizable melody. Then we organized, with one of the chiefs as conductor and the rest of the enlisted men as musicians (standing at attention at each light fixture). We performed to the plaudits of the rest of the F Division, then went on to greater glory with performances for the senior medical officer, gun boss, and finally the captain! All at least pretended to enjoy the performances.
With the coming of the New Year, we restored the light fixtures to their original condition and went on to other pursuits—such as setting the switches on the main battery switchboard so that when the board was energized the overload lights spelled out “Eat at Joes.” We never did achieve this.
