SUPER TRACKER
The first fully militarized parallel processor ever to fly is now at work. Aboard the E-2C, Loral ASPRO (Associative Processor) computers allow a single aircraft to keep track of thousands of targets (and possible targets) over a scanning area of 3 million cubic miles.
Another version, for underseas, over- the-horizon targeting, is now in production and has twice as much processing power (100 million operations per second). To date, over 50 systems have been delivered. Like most Loral programs, they came in on spec, on time, on budget.
Loral: first name in defense electronics.
DIESEL
PROPULSION
INTRODUCING WESHN«
The names Westinghouse and New Sulzer Diesel Ltd are synonymous with quality engineering in the production of marine propulsion systems. No manufacturer has served the U.S. Navy and merchant marine longer than Westinghouse. And New Sulzer Diesel’s tradition in diesel engines dates back to the production of the first marine diesel engines. Now Westinghouse and New Sulzer Diesel Ltd have joined forces. The most sophisticated and advanced marine diesel engines are now available in the United States.
LOW- AND MEDIUM-SPEED ENGINES FROM ONE SOURCE
Only now, is it possible to obtain both low- and medium-speed marine diesel engines from one American source.
Westinghouse-Sulzer diesel engines cover the full range of low- and medium-speed models to meet Navy and merchant vessel propulsion requirements. No other supplier can match our combination of experience and integration capabilities. That means we can tailor the propulsion system to the shipbuilder’s and operator’s requirements.
The teaming of Westinghouse and New Sulzer Diesel Ltd has created a new dimension for American shipbuilders. Simply stated, you cannot make a better choice for marine diesel propulsion systems than Westinghouse-Sulzer.

SCIENCE SCOPE
The F/A-18 Hornet has surpassed one million lifetime flight hours. This milestone reflects the F/A-18’s utility, flexibility, and readiness, which is partly due to its reliable APG-65 radar, built by Hughes Aircraft Company. The “one million” milestone combines flying hours for all the McDonnell Douglas-built F/A-18s, including operations with the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, the Canadian Forces, Royal Australian Air Force, Spanish Air Force, and NASA’s high-angle-attack research. Currently 900 planes use the APG-65 radar systems. The historic flight took place during operations from the aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower in the Mediterranean Sea.
Vital to the defense of coalition forces in Operation Desert Storm were two Hughes missiles, the Maverick and the TOW. The U.S. Air Force fired approximately 100 Maverick missiles per day, while Saudi forces relied heavily on TOW missiles to clear Khafji of invading Iraqi troops, destroying 46 armored vehicles. TOWs were also fired from Marine Corps Cobra helicopters during the Khafji battle, helping destroy 20 T-55 Iraqi tanks and armored personnel carriers. The Mavericks and TOWs were two of 55 different Hughes systems deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm.
Dual Spectrum fire sensors will be installed on operational aircraft for the first time, as a Hughes- built system has qualified for use aboard the Air Force’s C-5 Galaxy military transport. The proven Dual Spectrum fire sensor can detect an explosion or fire in an enclosed space so quickly, a fire suppressant can be released before any damage occurs. The units, located in the pylon and nacelle of each engine, can be connected to warning panels on the flight deck and nitrogen purging systems on the aircraft. The sensors, which offer tremendous safety benefits to aircraft personnel, have long been used on tanks and other military vehicles, and more recently aboard civilian passenger buses.
Hughes and Norway are building the world’s first operational surface-to-air missile battery that uses new fire-and-forget Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air missiles (AMRAAM) in a ground-launch system. The missiles contain active radar and do not need an illuminator radar to guide them to the target. This prototype system, the second phase of the Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), will include a Norwegian-built fire distribution system, Hughes-built three-dimensional TPQ-36A radar and off-the-shelf AMRAAM missiles, and a jointly-built ground AMRAAM launcher. The new missile system should help Norway cut its manpower requirements to meet its air defense needs.
A new solid-state broadband transmitter operates at considerably lower cost and reduced power consumption, while having performance equivalent to a 200-watt “brute force” system. This HIBT-118 — the latest in the Hughes family of AMU solid-state broadband transmitters — uses high- power FET amplifiers and unique microwave circuitry to achieve state-of-the-art performance in solid-state equipment. The inherent flexibility associated with its broadband l-to-80 channel design, plus its increased power, provides for supertrunking applications well in excess of 20 miles.

i new high performance SEM-E Enhanced Modular Signal Processor- ultimate signal processing system.
We’ve got solutions down to a science.
Scheduled for as many as 700 Navy platforms by the year 2000, AT&T has already delivered the first of 19
systems ordered under the initial SEM-E production contract. Over the next year, SEM-Es will be delivered for P-3C Update iy ALFS, SQQ-89, and others.
An evolution of the original SEM-B, SEM-E meets your tactical processing needs while reducing weight, volume, size, and power requirements.
SEM-E provides a 43% increase in throughput compared with SEM-B. It uses larger circuit cards and extensive ASICs to achieve between 120 million and 2 billion operations per second, with fewer components.
This significantly reduces size and price while greatly enhancing reliability The new AT&T SEM-E EMSP provides an automated programming environment, graphic programming techniques using symbols, and automatic source code generation.
The SEM-E EMSP is also modular, permitting changes in
performance and configuration as your requirements change.

The right choice.
Seawolf is the first major underseas weapons system designed on a computer, and specifically for modular construction But this design goes heyond just original construction.
Developed with our exclusive threedimensional solid graphics system, the design also factors in Scawolf’s life cycle needs in maintenance and logistics support.
It’s a design for now, and one we can keep current through every change during the ship’s lifetime.
And it’s a design our Navy can rely on to meet its challenges of the future.

give our customers tomorrow's technology now'
From the outside, it may look like any other system. But inside, that's where you'll find the real difference. Sanders technology.
Lockheed Sanders leads in the development and application of new technologies - in avionics, surveillance, embedded processing, radar, antisubmarine warfare, countermeasures, displays, and signal processing systems.
At our Microwave Technology Center, for example, ground-breaking developments in gallium arsenide circuitry are revolutionizing military electronics. Smaller, more reliable, and less expensive, GaAs chips are forming the core of the military's electronic future. Our MIMIC-based modules are integral parts of Sanders countermeasure systems, expendable decoys, active antenna arrays, ground- based radars, and automated test systems.
Similar breakthroughs can be seen in our work with the most modern cockpit display systems. These will see widespread use in new aircraft as well as in the growing area of aircraft retrofits.
At Sanders, we're meeting customer needs with affordable technology. We're also finding ways to make quality, reliable systems even better.

Mk 45: a versatile weapon for today’s defense.
Emerging missions for contingency and limited objective warfare demand weapons that are both accurate and flexible. As the main gun aboard major surface combatants of the U.S. Navy, the Mk 45 is relied upon for midrange anti-surface, strike, and fire support missions. It provides our surface combatants the versatility and firepower to limit escalation of conflict, guard vital sea lanes, and protect U.S. interests on a global scale.
The Mk 45 fires all types of 5-inch 54 caliber ammunition. Rounds can be selected in any required sequence from a mixed magazine. It is the most compact, lightweight 5-inch gun ever built, and is proven in Modular, containerized applications. Mk 45 can be fitted aboard ships as small as 2000 tons.
Designed for any combat environment, the Mk 45 is Vvater-tight, and has de-icing and NBC protection. As proof °f system integrity, Mk 45 is the only gun larger than 30mm
to have passed the U.S. Navy’s stringent barge shock test to Military Standard 901C.
Long proven aboard U.S. Navy cruisers, destroyers and amphibious assault ships, Mk 45 is fast becoming the naval gun of choice for many other fleets. Installations include Turkish YAVUZ class and scheduled Track II frigates, and new construction ships for Greece, Australia, and New Zealand. In total, more than 150 systems have been delivered worldwide.
FMC is the source of Mk 45 design, production and operational support on a global basis. For more information, write FMC Corporation, Naval Systems Division, 4800 East River Road, Minneapolis MN 55421-1498, (612) 571-9201.

THE AV-8B HARRIER II PLUS. Few weapon systems have been so flexible and responsive in their support of America's frontline troops. And now this battle- hardened warrior has grown even tougher. With new radar it can get to the action regardless of weather. Direct a lethal payload with deadly accuracy at ground targets on arrival. And protect itself on the way with today's most advanced missiles.
New radar, advanced avionics and a more powerful engine add a completely new dimension to its combat capability—and give tomorrow's Marine air/ground team affordable new flexibility. Never a pretty sight in the eyes of America's adversaries, the new Harrier II Plus will be harder than ever to face.
