Accurate. Reliable. Affordable. Proven. VLA is ready to go into production.
Accurate. During its at-sea tests, VLA delivered its payload to the target location with an accuracy 1.4 times better than spec.
Reliable. During its highly successful test program, VLA met or exceeded all design requirements, including reliability.
Affordable. With VLA, the fleet imme diately gains the all-weather, urgent attack capability it needs against medium range submarine threats. Without further development costs. And with an acquisition cost that is affordable, even in today's budget environment.
VLA: One off the best investments the Navy will ever make.
Beware Of Copy Cats.
In a world of look-alikes, parts “just as good” as ’ the originals often aren’t.
Money. Cut corners to save it, and you often end up spending more, -specially when buying replacement parts for Navy or Marine steam turbine systems.
Systems Vs. Parts
M bile machine shops don’t make parts with total systems performance in mind, GE understands how each part functions as a critical component of an integrated system. GE is the leading supplier of steam turbine propulsion, electrical generation and gear systems consequently, we can draw upon a century of technical knowledge and millions of hours of operating data, that can't he matched by any machine shop. y
p ?a!Hmay l<>ok Hkc GE- but can be quite different in reality.
C la \ ' l)ai ts aie made to our original design specifications
material lists and manufacturing records, and include test result’s and special processes that copy cats can’t copy.
Sea Time Vs. Port Time
Dependable parts are critical today. Time between ship overhauls is King.sti etched. I nne allowed to do overhauls is being shortened So l ephiceinent parts must work right the first time to prevent costly . tallat.on delays or a crippling failure at sea. Rely on GE parts ' backed by our worldwide network of installation and service professionals. Then you’ll know-before your ship returns to sea-that its steam turbine system will work as well as, or even better than the original.

WE'VE LAUNCHED A NEW ERA IN NAVAL AVIATION.
^ To be precise, we’re talking about some hot aircraft from Fort Worth, Texas. General Dynamics has created two advanced technology, next-generation aircraft for the Navy.
Namely: the A-12, a super-tech attack plane with air-to-air capabilities, reconnaissance, and electronic Airfare potential. And the NATF (Navy Advanced Tactical Fighter), a multi-role, advanced fighter under development to replace the F-14.
All this hot naval weaponry comes from a corporation known for such advanced naval weapon systems as Trident nuclear submarines, Phalanx CIWS, Tomahawk SLCM and Standard Missile.
General Dynamics helped the Navy master the
high seas. Now we’ll take on higher territory. GENERAL DYNAMICS

SCIENCE SCOPE
Bilots flying the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 Hornet aircraft have a new navigational aid to help them in smoke, haze, darkness and adverse weather. Designed and built by Hughes Aircraft Company, the Thermal Imaging Navigation Set (TINS) uses a thermal imaging sensor to provide pilots with a television-like image of the terrain ahead. The image is projected onto a head-up display for night viewing or in poor visibility. TINS consists of four weapon replaceable assemblies including a forward-looking infrared sensor unit that detects and converts infrared energy into an electronics signal. Operational and technical evaluation tests, which began in late 1989, will continue for the next few years.
More than 20 nations protect their sovereign airspace with command, control and communications systems produced by Hughes, the world’s most experienced developer of automated air defense systems. The systems are comprised of air defense radars, computers, displays, communications and other electronic subsystems. Target information is transmitted through data links to data processing centers, where computers automatically track and report the aircraft’s speed, altitude, and course.
The systems are tailored to the requirements of each country based on geography, military equipment, and size and structure of military forces. Nations equipped with Hughes systems include Japan, Switzerland, the U.S., Spain, Canada, Malaysia and European NATO members Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and West Germany.
iVtiny “eve” designed for a missile has given scientists a new wav of looking at the sun. The eye, actually a tiny chip containing 97,600 infrared detector elements, was provided by Hughes to the California Institute of Technology to observe certain aspects of sunspots in a very narrow band of the infrared electromagnetic spectrum. The observations will provide data about solar flare activity, which has a bearing on the Earth’s ozone layer. The sensor chip was originally developed by Hughes for use as the “eye” of a new missile. There, the chip detects infrared energy, which is converted into a video image, allowing a soldier to monitor the missile’s flight and guide it to its target.
Xhe first production tactical radar to incorporate gate arrays that meet very high speed integrated circuit (VHSIC) requirements is operational in U.S. aircraft. Hughes’ APG-70 radar system built with the new U-Series gate arrays has been installed in U.S. Air Force F-15 eagle aircraft. The HCMOS-II gate arrays have an effective channel length of 1.1 microns, a complexity of up to 40,000 gates, and can operate at 25 megahertz clock rate. Seventeen different designs of the U-Series gate arrays are used in 121 places on the standard avionics modules of the APG-70 programmable signal processor. The APG-70 is produced for later model F-15C/D and F-15E aircraft under contract from McDonnell Douglas Corporation.
More powerful, more versatile, body-stabilized satellites will soon provide Australia with diroot television broadcasts and worldwide mobile communications. Australia’s next generation communication satellites, AUSSAT B, built by Hughes and designated the HS 601, are body-stabilized, or three-axis, commercial satellites, and use internal momentum wheels to provide stabilization in orbit! They will make possible direct broadcast of television into small antennas, and their three-kilowatt power levels will allow AUSSAT Pty Ltd, Australia’s national satellite company, to offer satellite communications to people in moving vehicles. Launch date for the first satellite is late 1991.

Every small ship needs a powerful Sidekfc1*
Destroyers, frigates, and corvettes often operate outside a fleet’s active ECM protection net. If they come under anti-ship missile attack, they must rely on their own chaff, gun, and missile systems for protection. They carry no active ECM system to confuse and deflect such threats.
That problem has been solved by Raytheon. Today, the USS Reid and USS Hawes, both frigates, have a lightweight active ECM system nicknamed Sidekick. It gives a small ship’s passive SLQ-32(V)2 electronic warfare system the active capability needed to support all
ocean operations.
At the request of the U.S. Na^’ Raytheon designed, produced, and delivered the Sidekick in 11 weeks- Only our long experience in creak ing advanced EW systems for the U.S. Navy and Air Force made such a quick response possible.
Once again, strict adherence the fundamentals of multibeam technology, antenna design, and systems management enabled Raytheon to meet an important defense need.

Reflections of a Carrier Pilot
Rear Admiral Paul T. Gillcrist, USN (Ret.) A chronicle of adventure, heroism, courage and humor, with some of the most exciting passages ever written on flying. Gillcrist’s descriptions are so real that they make your pulse race and your palms sweat. From his magical first flight—the sheer ecstacy of being airborne, the heart-pounding excitement of his first night “trap”, the terror of ejecting from a test plane spinning out of control, dodging SAMs and jousting with MiGs over Hanoi—Gillcrist takes the reader into his world and vividly conveys what all pilots live for—the tremendous “high” of all-out flying.

The All-New F-14D Has Guts The World Has Never Seen.
The Navy's most advanced, most capable aircraft ever, has arrived. With unprecedented air-to-air combat and attack capabilities, the twin-engine, swing-wing F-14D takes its place as Americas premier carrier-based fighter.
Innovative systems for effective weapons delivery, sophisticated radar, defensive electronic jamming, secure communications, and digital avionics are all fully integrated in the new F-14D.
It also boasts newly designed, high-performance engines for added thrust with improved reliability and maintainability.
To provide a tactical advantage, the F-14D's unique radar,
IR, and EO sensors can detect, identify and track airborne targets actively or passively at very long range.
Plus, each of these systems has the potential for easy, cost- effective upgrades in the future.
The F-14D is endowed with truly awesome capabilities thanks to the collaborative effort of Americas leading aerospace and high-technology companies, all coordinated by Grumman Corporation under a fixed-price contract. What's more, the F-14D was promised for and delivered in March 1990.

“Beyond the Barrier is the
very best book to date on Antarctica and Richard Byrd Nothing can match it in breadth, scope, and coverage. - Lisle A Rose Author of Assault on Eternity: Richard E. Byrd and the Exploration of Antarctica, 1946-47
This book is, quite simply, the most important work yet written about America’s legendary polar explorer Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Until now, scholars have had to rely on sources of questionable objectivity resulting from the protective influence of Byrd’s heirs and friends, or in some cases, from pressure exerted by the admiral himself. For this study, however, the author consulted Byrd’s private papers, recently opened at Ohio State University. And Eugene Rodgers had made full use of them to write a scrupulously honest account of Byrd’s 1928 expedition to Antarctica. 320 pages. 36 photos. Notes.

THREE GENERATIONS OF QUALITY AND DEPENDABILITY MAKE WESTINGHOUSE THE CLEAR CHOICE FOR SEAWOLF
■Westinghouse makes them quieter, lighter, more powerful and cost effective." It’s more than just a slogan, it's a fact, borne out by three generations of top quality submarine propulsion systems—GELREP IPMP I and now, IPMP II, the SSN-21 main propulsion unit.. .the latest generation of quiet power designed for Seawolf.
To meet all the SSN-21 requirements, Westinghouse invested over $42 million to expand our manufacturing capabilities. We assembled a team of design, manufacturing and product support professionals second to none—a team whose abilities were proven on the successful GELREP and IPMP I programs. And we’ve continued to refine and improve the design and ensure the quality of our submarine propulsion systems. The result is a lightweight, low noise main propulsion unit that gives new meaning to the phrase “quiet power.”
From design through manufacturing, to field support, you can depend on Westinghouse... clearly the low-risk choice for Seawolf.

Mk4L One system, many weapons.
Its time has come: a single integrated shipboard system to launch the U.S. Navy’s highly potent mix of STANDARD, TOMAHAWK and VI.-ASROC weapons.
Ilic Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) now ■ttakes it possible to counter any threat, whether air, surface, subsurface or land-based. Fast-reacting and. selective in response, it is ready 24 hours a day, regardless of weather.
Based on a highly modular design, the Mk 41 VLS can be integrated aboard most surface combatants by varying the number and placement of 8-cell launcher modules. With all missiles and associated launch Cciuipment below an armored deck, the VLS offers maximum survivability in battle. Each 8-cell module Performs all launch functions, providing redundancy Wlthin the launcher, thus assuring system reliability.
Currently, the Mk 41 VLS is being installed aboard me Navy’s newest AEGIS cruisers and destroyers, and
selected SPRUANCE-class ships. Development continues to increase the variety of VLS weapons. FMC is working to integrate the SM2 Block IV and Sea Lance missiles within the VLS. We are also part of an international team integrating the vertically-launched NATO Seasparrow missile.
The Mk 41 is many weapons in one, a solution for more effective, affordable defense. It is a major weapon element of AEGIS ships, enabling the fleet to prevail in high-threat zones of vital interest to our nation.
