Beware Of Copy Cats.
In a world of look-alikes, parts “just as good” as the originals often aren’t.
Money. Cut corners to save it, and you often end up spending more. Especially when buying replacement parts for Navy or Marine steam turbine systems.
Systems Vs. Parts
While machine shops don’t make parts with total systems performance in mind, GE understands how each part functions as a critical component of an integrated system. GE is the leading supplier of steam turbine propulsion, electrical generation and gear systems. Consequently, we can draw upon a century of technical knowledge, and millions of hours of operating data, that can't be matched by any machine shop.
Genuine Vs. Imitation
Some parts may look like GE, hut can he quite different in reality. Reliable GE parts are made to our original design specifications, material lists and manufacturing records, and include test results and special processes that copy cats can’t copy.
Sea Time Vs. Port Time
Dependable parts are critical today. Time between ship overhauls is being stretched. Time allowed to do overhauls is being shortened.
So replacement parts must work right the first time to prevent costly installation delays, or a crippling failure at sea. Rely on GE parts hacked by our worldwide network of installation and service professionals. Then you’ll know—before your ship returns to sea—that its steam turbine system will work as well as, or even better than, the original.

unequaled in surveillance, target acquisition and handoff for greater battle survivability. Then we integrated our best minds ' with some of the best minds in the Army and came up with a total ^ , solution—the Mast-Mounted Sight (MMS).
1(1 In any weather—day or night—the MMS gives reconnaissance
crews greater standoff range so they can find trouble without getting into it. Its patented “soft mount” stabilization system
enables crews using the MMS TV, thermal imaging, and laser designator to see the enemy without getting the “jitters!’
This proven eye in the sky is also being used by the U.S. Navy on warships—increasing their surveillance abilities and survivability. And when it comes to drug and law enforcement, no other reconnaissance system stakes out territory like MMS.

DROP IN ANYTIME.
The oceans are alive with potentially hostile submarines. Silent, stealthy, deep, they wait patiently for the order to do us harm.
For more than 20 years Sanders has been listening to the ocean and understanding its secrets. Our ASW systems, both active and passive, give submarines no rest, no matter how silently they run, or how deep they dive. Unique flextensional transducers make
Sanders’ low-frequency, active sonar systems particularly unwelcome to enemy submarine captains. Both effective and economical, they are just one exam pie of our commitment to staying on top of the threat and yet under budget.
No matter what kind of hostile submarines are in the neighborhood, we help make sure they don’t drop in unannounced.

“Our philosophy is simple. Every day we have to be better than we were yesterday. I call it continuous measurable improvement.”
Malcolm R. Currie Chairman of the Board & CEO Hughes Aircraft Company
To meet tomorrow’s challenges, we have to be better every day. In engineering and design. Manufacturing and management.
At Hughes Aircraft Company, we’re doing it through a management and operations philosophy called continuous measurable improvement. A philosophy that is guiding us in everything we do—every day.
IMPROVING OUR OPERATIONS
It’s no wonder we’re increasing our success in designing and developing some of the most technologically advanced satellites, and communications, electrooptical, radar and defense systems in the world.
In less time, and at a lower cost.
By significantly increasing our production efficiency, we decreased by nearly 50% the per- unit cost of our Thermal Imaging Systems and Laser Rangefinders for Ml tanks, while also improving their quality.
By putting engineering, manufacturing, planning and production control in the same place, we
saved millions of dollars developing our HS 601 spacecraft. Plus we cut down by over two-thirds the time it takes to produce the HS 601’s thermal blankets, vital for temperature control.
By improving process flow for plannar array radar antennas used for fighter aircraft, we shortened assembly lead time 40%.
And by improving manufacturing processes in the Trident missile’s stellar sensor program, we decreased manufacturing cycle time 50% and increased production over 300%.
Because of the quality of our product, Hughes became the first major defense firm authorized by the Department of Defense to deliver two major tactical display systems to the U.S. Navy without undergoing government quality inspections.
PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER
The people at Hughes share a commitment to excellence.
And they are empowered to solve problems, at all levels.
As a result, Hughes designers
and production people exchange ideas freely from a project’s inception.
Planners and engineers work in the same area at the same time. To solve problems as they arise, and cut manufacturing cycle time—sometimes in half.
And people work in small groups, with full participation and responsibility for the final product.
THE HUGHES COMMITMENT
At Hughes, we believe it’s not enough simply to rest on our achievements. Through our commitment to continuous measurable improvement, we’re continually analyzing and improving our operations, measuring our progress every step of the way. Incorporating the manufacturing know-how of our partner, General Motors, while encouraging contributions from our people.
And I’m proud to say, every day we are better than we were yesterday.
Hughes. Exploring new worlds through technology.

INNOVATION.
COOPERATION.
LETHALITY.
The security of the fleet depends on defensive weapons to counter low observable anti-ship missiles (ASMs). By 1997, it is estimated that over 100 countries will have 40,000 ASMs capable of being launched from single or multiple sectors using air, surface or subsurface platforms.
RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) is a versatile, rapid and lethal response to the growing
ASM threat. Cooperatively sponsored by the U.S. Navy and the Federal Republic of Germany, RAM is the only fire-and-forget weapon system in production specifically designed to counter ASMs. With a high performance airframe and dual mode passive RF/IR guidance, RAM is extremely effective against high speed threats utilizing the most advanced countermeasure techniques. RAM uses existing ship sensors, and its modular design allows easy installation.
RAM, an effective, affordable weapon system designed by General Dynamics Valley Systems Division, will allow the fleet to “fight silent” in the sophisticated battle of the future.

Every small ship needs a powerful Sideki^i
Destroyers, frigates, and corvettes often operate outside a fleet’s active ECM protection net. If they come under anti-ship missile attack, they must rely on their own chaff, gun, and missile systems for protection. They carry no active ECM system to confuse and deflect such threats.
That problem has been solved by Raytheon. Today, the USS Reid and USS Hawes, both frigates, have a lightweight active ECM system nicknamed Sidekick. It gives a small ship’s passive SLQ-32(V)2 electronic warfare system the active capability needed to support all
ocean operations. >
At the request of the U.S. NaV^S Raytheon designed, produced, and ■ tre delivered the Sidekick in 11 weeks- Only our long experience in creat' ing advanced EW systems for the \.| U.S. Navy and Air Force made 0l" such a quick response possible.
Once again, strict adherence to the fundamentals of multibeam technology, antenna design, and systems management enabled Raytheon to meet an important defense need.

Tactical Training Technology
ASW Training. We’re Doing It.
Anti-submarine warfare training from CAE-Link is more real than the real world itself. CAE-Link training prepares ASW flight and sensor crews with more mission challenges than an entire career at sea . . . challenges so realistic that crews believe they are the real thing.
Real, too, is the teamwork, pride and dedication of the people at CAE-Link —in partnership with the Navy. Together we develop ASW trainers for emerging systems, update existing trainers, analyze training needs and develop training curricula.
P-3C... S-3B... SH-60B LAMPS... and dozens of other systems: ASW training from Link Tactical Simulation, Link Flight Simulation and Link Training Services meets the submarine threats of today . . . and we’re ready for the real world of tomorrow.

This multimode digital modem is a key component of the Navy's Link-11 and fleet broadcast systems. And because it performs so many functions, it helps minimize the number of equipments, which in turn minimizes maintenance and manpower requirements.
We already make them - fast
That's what the cake-cutting is all about. In a recent ceremony, the Navy accepted the first four production units two months ahead of schedule. We're under contract to deliver at least 50 by 1991, with options for additional units.
We have the experience
Over the past decade we've designed and developed modems, and are now producing the (IS. Navy's AN/CISQ-83 Data Terminal Set. An HF/CJHF digital modem, it's a highly flexible digital data-link component for shipboard and ground-based applications.

Ideal for dealing with budget cuts, this fully-developed training program, with all its existing ship types and ports, can now be used at any U.S. or overseas Surface or Submarine Fleet Base! MarineSafety will locate a fully compatible shiphandling training simulator anywhere need exists without major capital outlay by the Navy. Training would be on a tuition-basis as is presently the case in Newport.
For more information on this concept, contact Tom Garrigan at (516) 773-5603 or via Fax at -5604.
Over the past three years, more than 2700 U.S. Navy PCO’s, PXO’s and Dept. Heads attending SWOS Newport have had the advantage of simulator training. In addition, Officers from over 20 ships in the Pleet have come to the MarineSafety Simulator Complex for refresher training.
Using any one of 20 ship types and 15 geographic areas, the simulator training includes getting underway in wind and current, maneuvering in heavy traffic and Mooring alongside another ship. Other evolutions cover operations in dense fog, docking and UNREP at night or under adverse conditions. This training is being accomplished without risking a hundred- million dollar ship and its crew or burning hundreds of gallons of fuel per hour. QUIET RUNNING EPICYCLIC GEAR UNITS FOR MARINE MAIN PROPULSION
The Cincinnati Gear Company has been making epicyclic gears and gearboxes since 1956. Compact CGCO Marine Epicyclic Gears are based on the technically advanced and service
proven double-helical Stoeckicht epicyclic gear. The most important aspect of the Stoeckicht design is its proven load distribution to multiple planet wheels allowing the coaxial arrangement of the input and the output shaft to be utilized to its greatest advantage.
CGCO epicyclic gears provide efficient and silent transmission of power from all available electric motors, diesel engines, steam turbines, and gas turbine engines. Single and multi-staged units can be supplied with gear ratios to suit all required propeller speeds.
The compact coaxial design of the epicyclic gearbox permits placing the complete propulsion package far astern, greatly increasing crew and cargo hold space. All CGCO epicyclic gears are manufactured, tested and inspected on special machinery built for accuracy and offer years of dependable service. Using a well established and proven manufacturing process, over 25,000 units have been successfully produced by Cinti-BHS.
Designed-in features include:
- High reliability...through simple efficient design with components that are compatible up to 80,000 horsepower.
- Load equalization...floating sunwheel and annulus gear ensure uniform load sharing by three and as many as seven planet wheels.
- Reduced space required... through coaxial design and load sharing between the planet wheels.
- High efficiency...approximately 99% at full load because the Stoeckicht design is subject to only very small friction losses.
- Easy inspection and maintenance... casing is split horizontally or vertically so all bearings and gearings are readily accessible.
- Low noise level...through special gearing geometry and highest quality gear and surface finish.
- Controllable pitch, fixed pitch, and contrarotating propeller designs are available.
- Highest power density of any known drive.

Defeat of the Wolf Packs
n early 1943, wolf-packs of Nazi U-boats held the Allied North Atlantic lifeline in a death grip. But gradually the tide turned as the Allies went on the offensive. By the end of 1944, the German underwater forces had been effectively eliminated from the war. The drama of this story provides ample testimony to the heroics and bravery of the sailors and airmen of the Allied forces and the tenacity of their foes.

Until no\y no one had been able to beat the water speed record for a tracked amphibious assault vehicle set in 1940. But recently; the technology of AAI has allowed them to double— in fact, triple— the 10 mph record with their latest High Water Speed Technology Demonstrator (HWSTD).
This is all part of AM’s attempt to develop an “over the horizon” Advanced Assault Amphibious Vehicle (AAAV) that will be at home in water as well as on land and that will provide the protection, Mobility and fire power of a land combat vehicle.
AAI is currently developing and enhancing three such test beds. Each incorporates varying degrees of problem solving technology And since AAI is working hand-in-hand with the Land System division of General Dynamics— the world’s top builder of main battle Unks— the Marines will have the AAAVs to take them confidently into the 21st century

solving the customer’s future needs in the areas of terrain following and obstacle avoidance.
Duncan: That’s a characteristic of what we do. We take on these challenges to develop new products, in anticipation of the market.
McQuade: That’s the case with a lot of the technology that applies to SDI. We see derivatives being very important to the tactical world. Miniature sensors. Miniature'seekers. We are doing front- end work in support of both of those.
Duncan: The same can be said for our investment in IR technology, where today we’re being approached by every major weapon-system supplier that uses electro-optic devices.
McLuckey: We’ve become one of the two preeminent suppliers of focal planes in the United States. We’ve won major producibility contracts that will allow us to get the cost per pixel down, which is a necessary prerequisite to sell and incorporate focal planes into numerous tactical weapons.

Gunckel: In the guidance area, you can see the steady evolution of state-of- the-art technology to meet customer requirements with equipment that’s smaller, lighter, more reliable and much less expensive than the prior generation.
McQuade: And there’s been similar progress in the areas of processing and software.
Washington: For example in data multiplexing activities for the Navy, our system is in effect a Local Area Network. We have to interface with all the major weapon systems, command and control media and displays on board ship.

ong recognized as a premier problem solving organization, BDM wants you to know about something we do even better. We help you avoid many of tomorrow’s problems (or at least minimize them) by making better choices, finding better answers, designing better systems... today.
For example, BDM is creating millions of lines of software which is at the heart of a huge logistics information management system. This software is virtually error-free by design to avoid costly error correction and other problems later. For NASA, BDM’s Risk Analysis and Management System (BRAMS) will provide an integrated assessment of technical, schedule, and resource risks associated with Space Station Freedom... in time to do something about them. And the innovative computer/commu- nications, information, and manufacturing systems we develop and integrate for other clients will not only meet today’s requirements but evolve easily and affordably to meet tomorrow’s. In our test and evaluation work, too, we help clients achieve more effective, reliable systems in the first place, systems that won’t have to undergo costly future fixes.
Faced with a serious problem today?
We’ll find superior solutions for you. We do it every day for clients in the defense community, civil government, and industry. We apply (and in many cases devise) the most modern tools of research, analysis, assessment, design, engineering, integration, testing, and training. Guided by the most effective tool of all, the human mind: BDM people.
BDM makes things work. Put us to work for you. To keep a problem from happening, or solve it if it does.

For ninety years, Electric Boat has dedicated itself to overcoming one obstacle. The 360,000,000 cubic miles that make up the world’s oceans.
That goal has led us to design and build submarines that are more efficient, more cost effective and more capable than ever thought possible.
Today, we’re taking submarine technology even further. Computer-aided design. Automated hull fabrication. Modular construction. Artificial intelligence.

Before naval systems can talk to each other, people have to.
Cooperation. Clear communication. Autonetics Marine Systems Division knows these are the keys to systems integration, no matter what the program. Our business depends on the partnerships we build with our customers, team members and suppliers.
We’re experienced at managing today’s complex, multinational programs—whether using systems and products provided by ourselves or others. Think of us as Rockwell International’s worldwide center of excellence
for your surface and subsea naval requirements.
The Royal Australian Navy’s submarine program is just one example of our capabilities. Here, we’re integrating the systems and personnel provided by a group of 27 subcontractors from nine different nations.
Programs like this demand technological leadership. And our experience in distributed processing, fiber-optic networks and other technologies gives you solid answers to global peacetime
surveillance and other demanding naval missions.
Autonetics Marine Systems Division can apply the same technical and management skills to your own program. Call (714) 762-3327 to talk about how we can help your systems talk to each other.

Ingalls & Aegis...
Synonyms for Success
When selected as lead shipbuilder for the design and construction of the U.S. Navy’s TICONDEROGAfCG 47) Class of Aegis guided missile cruiser, Ingalls Shipbuilding guaranteed excellence. With 12 of the 19 contracted vessels delivered on or ahead of schedule and under budget, that guarantee is being kept.
Similar success is being achieved in the Navy’s ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) Class of Aegis guided missile destroyers and WASP (LHD1) Class of multipurpose amphibious assault ships. The keel for the BARRY (DDG 52), the first of six Aegis destroyers under contract, was laid in February 1990 and delivery is scheduled for mid-1992. The first LHD was delivered in 1989, and three additional LHDs will join the fleet by mid-1994.
Ingalls is fast becoming a synonym for success with foreign navies. A new class of corvettes has been designed, and three ships are already under contract for one foreign navy. Ingalls is marketing the design worldwide.
After more than a half-century of building the world’s most sophisticated warships, Ingalls Shipbuilding is set to sail into the 21st century without wavering from its unparalleled dedication to excellence. That is why Ingalls Shipbuilding and Aegis are truly synonyms for success.
