Rear Admiral Eugene B. Fluckey was one of the top U. S. submarine skippers of World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his achievements in command of the USS Barb (SS-220). In addition to serving as Admiral Nimitz’s aide from 1945 to 1947, he held a number of commands after the war. His last tour of duty prior to retirement in 1972 was as Commander Iberian Atlantic Command and Chief of the Military Assistance Advisory Group Portugal.
