Prior to retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces on 1 February 1969, Captain D. P. Ryan, Royal Canadian Navy (Retired), was Commander, First Canadian Escort Squadron based at Halifax, N.S. Serving during World War II in Atlantic ocean escorts, he qualified as Naval Aviator in 1944. Since that time he has alternated between aviation, destroyer, and staff assignments. His commands have included VF-871, HMCS Kootenay (DDE-258), RCN Air Station, (now CFB) “Shearwater,” and HMCS Saguenay (DDH 206).
