CWO-4 Holmes joined the Marine Corps in 1934. He was among the first three enlisted Marines to graduate from the electrical “A” course at the coast artillery school in Fort Monroe, Virginia. An ordnance specialist, he instructed in the Marine Corps Schools at Quantico, Virginia, and served as the Marine Corps representative to the U. S. Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, Indiana, and to the Navy Ordnance Supply Office in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. During the Korean Conflict, he served with the Marine Barracks at U. S. Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Japan, and with the 1st 90-mm. AAA Gun Battalion in Korea. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1964.
