Lieutenant Colonel Steven Eden, U.S. Army (Retired), graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and served more than 25 years as an armor officer in the Army, along the way earning his master’s degree in history at the University of Wisconsin. He is currently an instructor with the U.S. Defense Information School’s Public Affairs Leadership Department.
Norman Friedman writes a monthly column, “World Naval Developments,” that appears in Naval History’s sister publication, Proceedings. His many books include Network-Centric Warfare: How Navies Learned to Fight Smarter through Three World Wars (2009), U.S. Aircraft Carriers: An Illustrated Design History (1983), and American & British Aircraft Carrier Development: 1919–1941 (1999), all published by the Naval Institute Press.
Admiral James L. Holloway III, U.S. Navy (Retired), served in the Navy for 36 years, during which time he was under direct enemy fire in three wars—World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He went from surface ships to an extensive career as a naval aviator to the post of Chief of Naval Operations, which he held from 1974–78. He recently retired from the Naval Historical Foundation after 26 years as chairman and president.
Edward J. Marolda, former senior historian of the U.S. Navy, has written or edited 11 books on the modern history of the Navy, including The U.S. Navy in the Korean War (2007) and, with Robert J. Schneller, Shield and Sword: The United States Navy and the Persian Gulf War (2001), both published by the Naval Institute Press.
Barrett Tillman is the author of many books about World War II naval aircraft and the Pacific air war, including Whirlwind: The Air War Against Japan, 1942–45 (Simon & Schuster, 2010), Clash of the Carriers: The True Story of the Marianas Turkey Shoot of World War II (NAL Caliber, 2005), and The Dauntless Dive Bomber of World War II, (Naval Institute Press, 1976, 2006).
J. Wandres is a retired U.S. Navy public affairs specialist and the author of The Ablest Navigator: Lieutenant Paul N. Shulman, USN, Israel’s Volunteer Admiral (Naval Institute Press, 2010). He is currently working on a book about the Norden Broadcasts, the U.S. Navy’s secret World War II propaganda programs transmitted in German to U-boat commanders and crews.
