A graduate from Harvard in 1909, Mr. Pickering sailed yachts off and on for 40 years, on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He entered the Coast Guard Reserve as a lieutenant (j.g.) in 1942 and for a while commanded the CGR-309 in the Pacific, later being stationed at naval bases in Key West and San Diego. An advertising man by profession, he wrote articles for Yachting, Motor Boating, Sea, and other magazines.
