Lieutenant McGuffie is a 2003 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. During his first sea tour he served as main propulsion assistant on the USS Benfold (DDG-65). He then served two years in HMS Cornwall as a bridge watchkeeper as part of the Personnel Exchange Program. He reported to the Navy's Office of Legislative Affairs in January 2008 as a Senate Liaison Officer.
