Commander Mark Metcalf, U.S. Navy (Retired), a retired surface warfare officer and naval cryptologist, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, the Defense Language Institute, and the Naval Postgraduate School (MSEE). He currently is a lecturer at the University of Virginia, where he teaches a seminar on Sun Tzu’s Art of War. Commander Metcalf holds graduate degrees in Chinese studies from the University of Arizona (MA) and the University of Cambridge (MPhil). He is a Life Member of the U.S. Naval Institute.
