The conduct of war requires rapid and effective adaptation to changing circumstances to ensure success. Further, the wars of the past must be studied for the lessons that they offer to present and future leaders who might be called upon to conduct warfare. While every conflict involves a certain degree of flexibility and innovation, there are certain changes that have periodically occurred throughout recorded human history that have fundamentally altered the conduct of warfare. Some historians and military operators have used the term “Revolutions in Military Affairs” (RMAs) to label the most prominent of such changes. These revolutions often include technological innovations, such as the development of nuclear weapons. They also encompass entirely new approaches to strategy, such as the changes wrought by Napoleon’s ability to more effectively marshal the resources of an entire nation. Revolutionary ideas in military theory, doctrine, and operations have also permanently changed the methods, means, and objectives of warfare.
