Portrait of Tomiji Koyanagi

Rear Admiral Tomiji Koyanagi, former Imperial Japanese Navy, was the commanding officer of the battleship Kongo. He became Vice Admial Takeo Kurita's chief of staff with the Second Fleet in Jul 1943. During the Leyte campaign in Oct 1944, he was aboard the flagship, heavy cruiser Atago, with Kurita when the fleet was ambushed and sunk by American submarines. Koyanagi survived and transferred to battleship Yamato with Kurita. He died in 1978.
