Author of four non-fiction books on aviation and contributor to various national magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post and The Reader’s Digest, Commander Winston left a newspaper career to enter naval aviation when the aviation cadet program was begun in 1935, worked up to squadron commander of VF-31, and became air group commander on the U.S.S. Cabot. After inactive duty in the post-World War II period, he returned to active duty in 1949 as Special Assistant for Plans and Policy to the Director of Public Relations, Navy Department.
