Currently a member of Princeton University's Department of History, Dr. Butow took his A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees at Stanford University. Called to active duty in 1943, he attended the U. S. Army's Intensive Japanese Language School at the University of Michigan and the Military Intelligence Service Japanese Language School at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He later served in Japan as Language-Intelligence Officer with the Civil Intelligence Section of GHQ, SCAP.
