For the past thirty years, Rear Admiral Ofstie has been attached to the Naval Aeronautical Organization, passing through all stages from junior officer in a Fighter Squadron to command of the Fast Carrier Task Force off Korea, his latest assignment.
In World War II, he served on the Staff of Fleet Admiral Nimitz in the Pacific, then commanded the aircraft carrier Essex in numerous Central Pacific operations and, finally, had command of an Escort Carrier Division furnishing air support for Marine and Army ground forces in Western Pacific landings.
Post-war, he was Senior Naval Member of the U. S. Strategic Bombing Survey in its study of the air effort against Japan, and subsequently became a member of the Military Liaison Committee to the Atomic Energy Commission, a position he held until returning to sea last year in his present command.
