Commander Mares graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 2007. While on active duty, he served as a contingency planner and budget officer and earned his MBA and masters in education from Stanford University. As a reservist, he has been activated for planning and budget officer roles. He currently drills at Indo-Pacific Command in the Strategy and Policy Division.
