Before entering the Naval Reserve, Lieutenant Commander Bodler saw duty in the Merchant Marine in all capacities from AB Seaman to 2d Mate. His first service in the Navy was as watch officer and pilot on a seagoing hopper dredge of the Army Engineer Corps. He was serving on the U.S.S. Liscome Bay when that vessel was lost and in June 1945 was in command of a destroyer escort.
