Lieutenant Schonberg is a surface warfare officer in the USS Freedom (LCS-1). He received the Admiral Arleigh Burke Surface Warfare Operational Excellence Award in 2010 for assuming the role of operations officer as a first tour division officer in the USS Thach (FFG-43) while deployed with Carrier Strike Group 7.
