James J. Wirtz is a Professor in the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He has written extensively about intelligence, strategy, nuclear and conventional deterrence, and maritime affairs. He recently co-authored The U.S. Navy and the Rise of Great Power Competition: Looking Beyond the Western Pacific (Routledge: 2024). He is currently working on the 8th edition of Strategy in the Contemporary World (Oxford: Forthcoming). The International Studies Association recognized him as a Distinguished Intelligence Scholar in 2016.
